Construction begins on 140,000 sq ft HSBC offices

Construction has begun on the new HSBC office in the Sheffield Retail Quarter.

The “multi-million pound” investment by the bank will deliver 140,000 sq ft of office space and a rooftop terrace.

HSBC has taken a 15-year lease on the site in a deal which marks the largest real estate transaction in Sheffield in 10 years.

Construction firm BAM has been on site for demolition works for several months, but now that construction is underway, the building is due for completion in spring 2019.

The milestone was marked by a groundbreaking ceremony attended by James Emmett, chief operating officer at HSBC Bank plc, Julie Dore, leader of Sheffield City Council, and John Mothersole, CEO of SCC.

James Emmett, COO at HSBC Bank plc, said: “Sheffield is a key regional hub for our IT operations and we are delighted to be investing in a new home in the city to create a modern office environment for our people. Today’s ground breaking ceremony marks the start of the construction of our new office in the Sheffield Retail Quarter and we look forward to continuing to work closely with Sheffield City Council to deliver this.”

John Mothersole, CEO of SCC, said: “This is a key moment in the delivery of Sheffield’s city centre regeneration and a major milestone in the delivery of the much-anticipated retail quarter. We welcome HSBC’s decision to make this location their new regional home, which demonstrates the continuing confidence from major international employers towards Sheffield.”

This comes following the news that the Sheffield City Region has enjoyed its best-ever year for investment by foreign-owned companies, up 50% in 2016.

The nine districts across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Notts which comprise the SCR have seen a massive £1.9bn pumped into the region, with more than 7,000 jobs created or safeguarded, according to SCR.

Notable investments include the iPort site at Doncaster – Verdion is backed by the giant Canadian pension fund HOOP and a partnership agreement between Sheffield City Council and the Chinese-led Sichaun Guodong will see major investment in Sheffield, including apartments, offices, leisure facilities and a five-star hotel.
