Mining group to enter FTSE 250 for first time

Sirius Minerals is expected to join the FTSE 250 this week as part of a reshuffle of the index’s members.

The company is behind the £2.3bn York potash mine project and last year it raised £1bn to enable construction work to begin.

The FTSE 250 index ranks the largest listed companies by market value and undergoes quarterly reviews to reflect recent changes. The June review also assesses companies’ liquidity as well as its value.

Sirius recently moved from the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) to the main list, enabling it to enter the FTSE rankings.

Coats Group and Melrose are also expected to enter the FTSE 250 while AO World and Debenhams are likely to drop out.

Sirius has a market capitalisation value of £1.18bn, making it one of several Yorkshire companies to have a 10-figure valuation.

Housebuilder Persimmon is the region’s most valuable listed company, with a value of £7.5bn.
