A major construction project which sees frozen foods giant McCain invest more than £100m in its North Yorkshire production facility is underway.

Following Scarborough Borough Council’s formal recommendation of approval for McCain Foods’ plan to renew the Scarborough production facility, senior councillors and bosses of McCain GB gathered at the site for a ground breaking ceremony.

Established in Eastfield almost 50 years ago, the McCain Foods Scarborough facility is one of the company’s most successful sites.

Regional CEO for McCain GB & Ireland, Nick Vermont, says: “We are delighted to be officially cutting ground and commencing our renewal plans for the Scarborough site.

“The investment we are making to renew the facility will secure the continued, long-term success of our site here in Eastfield for generations to come, allowing us to meet the increased demand for our products. As well as upgrading equipment, we will also be delivering broader environmental benefits, such as installing state-of-the-art odour reduction technology.”

Cllr Bastiman added: “This event sends a clear message from McCain that it is committed to operations in Scarborough and moving forward with its investment in the facility here. We are pleased to see this work getting underway and look forward to seeing the transformation of the site over the coming years.”

For the year to June 2016, pre-tax profits at McCain GB increased to £63.8m from £58.3m the year before.

Revenues at the group, which employs 1,274 people across its operations, were up by more than £12m to £452.3m.
