Historic clothing retailer calls in administrators

More than 300 jobs are at risk after clothing retailer Greenwoods, which has been in business since 1860, called in administrators.

Bradford-based Greenwoods Menswear Limited has appointed Adrian Berry and Clare Boardman of Deloitte as joint administrators. The company has 65 stortes nationwide and employs 318 staff. It operates several shops in the Yorkshire region including Bradford, Barnsley, Doncaster, Selby, Harrogate, Keighley and Wakefield.

The business continues to trade as normal and no redundancies have yet been announced.

Berry said: “We are currently assessing the options available to the company, including a potential sale of the business, and are continuing to trade it in the meantime.

“No redundancies are being announced at this stage and we are grateful to the employees for their support at this difficult time.

“This is a challenging time for the UK retail sector, which has affected the company.”

Greenwoods still has its HQ in Bradford after being founded by Sir Willie Greenwood. At its peak, Greenwoods had around 200 shops across the country.
