New cinema complex nearing completion

The final touches are being put in place to a new 11 screen cinema complex in Leeds which spans 60,000 sq ft and has 2,000 seats.

Cineworld is set to open its newest location at the White Rose Centre on 17 November and this week the construction site was opened up to the press for a behind-the-scenes tour.

LandSec first started work on the construction site in April 2016, and it was handed over to the Cineworld for the fit out stage earlier this year. An IMAX screen which is 24 metres by 14 metres is being installed in one of the screening rooms. Planning permission had to be amended part-way through the build due to the height of the roof line due to its size.

More than 150 people have been employed during the construction process and the cinema itself has created 75 jobs. When TheBusinessDesk.com visited this week, the building was in the midst of a fit-out which includes reclining seats and screens were due to be installed.

The Cineworld is being built in the shopping centre’s new The Village area, where numerous food brands have already moved in.

Andy Stone, Cineworld’s operations director for the north, said: “White Rose is a key location for us, as is Leeds. This will be a destination venue for customers who will have a range of things on site to visit at the same time.”

General Manager for Cinewold White Rose, Steve Peterson, said: “We are bringing cinema to the area and it’s really exciting.”

Advanced tickets are now on sale for the new premises and the Cineworld team say the upcoming film schedule offers a varied and exciting programme.
