York’s Moxy hotel one of five set for the UK in 2018

Moxy, Marriott International’s budget-lifestyle brand, is set to open a York hotel this year as part of its European growth plans.

The brand plans to open a 119-bedroom York hotel, along with four other hotels across the UK. Last March, York Council  approved the plans for the hotel to be built on the Hungate site in York, despite concerns the building could overshadow a historic pub the Black Swan pub on Peasholme Green.

Vastint applied for the planning planning permission for the development on The Stonebow in York city centre.Vastint said: “The site sits between the Black Swan, a pub dating back to the early 1400’s and Hiscox Insurance’s new regional office which opened in 2016, the Moxy reflects both the historic and modern architecture surrounding it in its design.”

Moxy’s plans for the UK this year include opening hotels at London Heathrow Airport, Glasgow , Edinburgh  and Southampton. They were revealed as part of a wider announcement of the company’s European expansion, with 50 hotels expected to open between now and 2020.

John Licence, vice-president of premium and select brands at Marriott International, Europe, told The Caterer that Moxy was developed to respond to the changing needs of the next generation of travelers.

He added: “Moxy Hotels allow our guests to not take themselves too seriously, providing them with personalised experiences in a well-designed space that is surprisingly affordable, with the latest technology and plenty of social spaces that blend work and play.”
