Renowned Leeds restaurant shuts its doors after 27 years

A renowned Leeds restaurant has closed after 27 years.

Brasserie 44, based at The Calls, said on its website: “Sadly our 27 year run came to an end on May 1.

“We would like to thank all of our guests for their support.”

In 2011, proprietor Steve Ridealgh, one of the region’s best known restaurateurs, hit out at the number of eateries opening on the high street after seeing the business rescued from administration.

Ridealgh previously ran Pool Court in Pool-in-Wharfedale before taking over Brasserie 44 in 1994.

The news follows a string of closures across the UK’s casual dining sector.

High street chains Byron burger, Jamie’s Italian and Prezzo have all embarked on CVAs since the start of the year, allowing them to close loss-making stores and secure rent discounts.
