Business In Brief: Funding programme launched; Family business owner set for retirement; and more

AD:VENTURE, the European funded programme, has launched its grant programme in Calderdale for businesses looking to secure up to £25,000 match funded support.

The programme provides support to eligible young and new businesses who have strong growth ambition. Companies are asked to explain through a written business plan how the funding would help their next steps in their business journey and what difference it would make to their future success.

AD:VENTURE also provides practical support through a network of dedicated advisors; as well as offering master classes, workshops and events.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Strategy, Councillor Barry Collins, said: “The AD:VENTURE programme is an innovative scheme from Leeds City Region, offering businesses in Calderdale an exciting grant opportunity to help them flourish.

“Providing funding to help create jobs and to accelerate the growth of new and young enterprises makes perfect sense. Not only does it make a big difference to the individual business owners, but it also helps us to identify new and emerging business sectors and specialisms here in Calderdale and nurture the talents and successes of tomorrow.”

Suzanne Powell, Director of Hebden Bridge based VIZBOX Enclosures, who received a grant through a previous phase of the AD:VENTURE programme, added: “VIZBOX Enclosures manufacture outdoor projector enclosures. We export globally and are growing expediently.

“VIZBOX was supported by AD:VENTURE during 2017 and used the grant to access some specialised training and IT equipment. We had a positive experience, and our account manager was very informative and guided us well.”

Terry’s Star Butchers, a family-run butcher’s shop in Leeds, is for sale, as its owners seek retirement.

The business, which is based near Farnley, is currently on the market with business broker Hilton Smythe for £42,500.

Terry Riley, who has owned the shop with his wife Paula since 1988, has been in the meat business since he left school. Originally from Wolverhampton, he made his home in Leeds after getting a management job in a local factory. He started the shop as a side-line, but its popularity led him to running it full time.

Over the past 30 years, Terry and Paula’s five children have taken turns to help out running Terry’s Star Butchers, however now they have flown the nest, the Rileys have decided they would like to move on to their next adventure, spending time with their nine grandchildren.

Riley said: “I’ve always worked in retail, particularly meat, and I’ve absolutely loved running the shop, but the time has definitely come for me to hang up my apron. We’re a real hub of the community.”
