‘Mega-gym’ set to open after agreeing space on retail park

JD Gyms are set to open a new ‘mega-gym’ at Barnsley Retail Park after agreeing a deal with park owners, Peel Retail Parks for approximately 26,000 sq.ft of space at Twibell Street, which forms part of the Harborough Hill Road Retail Park.

The revamp of the property is already underway with two existing units being combined to create one giant space, which will house hundreds of pieces of gym equipment and more than 300 exercise classes a month.

Alun Peacock, Managing Director at JD Gyms, said: “We’re incredibly excited to be bringing a low-cost gym with a difference to Barnsley. We’ll be offering exceptional fitness facilities, an unrivalled class timetable, luxury surroundings and saunas in a convenient location on a highly affordable basis.

“There is huge demand for a gym of this caliber in this area and we cannot wait to open the doors at Barnsley Retail Park in February.”

The company, part of the JD Sports Fashion, has already opened 20 gyms in cities across the country – including Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds and Liverpool.

JD Gyms will operate from a standalone unit situated on Twibell Street and will make a great addition to the already strong line up at Barnsley Retail Park where tenants include B&M, Asda, The Range and Currys.

Leah Taylor, Development Manager at Peel Land and Property, which owns and manages Barnsley Retail Park, said: “JD Gyms is a welcome addition to the strong brands already established at the main Barnsley Retail Park. With free parking and a premium-feel, we expect the facility to be extremely popular.”

JD Gym plans to open at Barnsley Retail Park in February 2019.
