My Yorkshire: Karen Borowski, director at Revell Ward

Karen Borowski is a director at Revell Ward accountants in Huddersfield.

Where do you live/where are you from?

I now live in Slaithwaite just outside of Huddersfield, but I was born in Bradford and brought up in Cumbria – so I’ve moved around a bit!

What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?

I always love Scarborough. It’s a place that holds lots of memories for me and one that represents sea (albeit freezing), sun (albeit rare) and fun. As a family we’ve made many happy memories there over the years.

What’s still on your to-do list in the region?

I’m a sucker for a challenge, and my role as a charity tax specialist at Revell Ward means I’m lucky to have taken part in many over the years for various worthy causes. With that in mind, I’d love to tackle the three peaks. I’d like to test myself with both the physical and mental challenge.

I’d also like to try to build one of the dry stone walls that Yorkshire is so renowned for.

What is the most memorable meal you’ve had in Yorkshire?

Definitely anything I’ve eaten at The Lanterna restaurant in Scarborough. They make an amazing pudding called a Zabaglione that’s cooked on a gas stove at your table. It is to die for!

What is your most ‘Yorkshire’ trait?

Most definitely my no nonsense, straight talking approach to life. This approach transcends into the way we do things at Revell Ward, too – keeping it as simple and straight forward as possible is what we’re all about.

Favourite piece of trivia about the region?

It has to be the fact the glass in the London Eye was made in Huddersfield by one of our clients, Novaglaze.

What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?

I do like Geoffrey Boycott – his no-nonsense, straight-talking approach fits with mine perfectly!

First experience of Yorkshire?

I’m not sure if it’s an experience as such, but I have fond memories of eating my nan’s homemade Yorkshire puddings as a child. Her secret recipe has been in our family for generations.

Worst thing about Yorkshire?

As a Huddersfield Town fan, I’d have to say Leeds United – but I’ve probably alienated half of Yorkshire now!

One thing you’d steal from another UK region for Yorkshire if you could?

The weather from down South. It always seems warmer down there, doesn’t it?

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?

The old adage that we are tight and won’t do ‘owt for nowt’. At Revell Ward, we do loads of work for charities!
