£6m road improvement works to begin

A key Humber route will receive an investment boost this month with two major schemes starting on the A63 in Hull.

Next week, Highways England will begin a £6m improvement at a Hull roundabout, helping reduce congestion and smoothing traffic flows along Roger Millward Way. Preparation work is taking place ahead of the main work starting on Princes Quay Bridge over the A63, improving access across the busy route.

Work at Roger Millward Way roundabout will start on Monday 5 November and includes installing new traffic signals and building two new lanes through the middle of the roundabout.

This new ‘hamburger’ style road layout will mean that traffic can pass through the roundabout when traveling east or west, helping to reduce congestion and smoothing the flow of traffic in the area. Extra lanes will also be built on roundabout exits as well as creating a new lane on the eastbound approach.

Highways England project manager Chris Dunn said: “Investment in the A63 is great news for residents, businesses and commuters. At busy times, around 4,500 vehicles an hour travel round Roger Millward Way roundabout. These improvements will reduce journey times for drivers and make traffic flow smoother. We’ll also be upgrading facilities for pedestrians and cyclists to make the roundabout safer for them.”

The improvements to the roundabout are being funded as part of a nationwide £220m Congestion Relief Fund which was announced by the Government last year to help tackle congestion at key locations.

Work on Roger Millward Way is expected to take around 9 months to complete and will be carried out by the same contractors as the forthcoming Princes Quay Bridge work. The schemes are being carried out together under one contractor to minimise disruption and to make the best use of the funds available.

Both schemes will be completed in advance of the major A63 Castle Street project, which will improve access to the port and city centre. Work on the scheme is due to begin in 2020.

In addition to these schemes, work is currently taking place on a £3m scheme which will improve safety along the A63 westbound carriageway between Melton and South Cave. In total 5 miles of road is being resurfaced and 650 metres of steel barrier is also being replaced.
