Architect appointed for conservation works on Grade-II listed church

A Grade-II listed church, which has been unused for several years, is set to undergo significant repairs and improvements

Martin Walsh Architectural (MWA) has secured listed building consent on behalf of client Pentecostal City Mission Church to carry out the works on St Johns Pentecostal Church in Roundhay, Leeds.

MWA, the RIBA chartered family-owned architects, will be responsible for overseeing repairs to both the interior and exterior of the building on Wetherby Road.

Repairs to the building’s external walls will commence in mid-February, ensuring the church is structurally sound and fully weathertight, repairing and preventing any further structural damage.

Interior improvements will also be made, including the fit out of a new heating system and the installation of a lighting system.

A new kitchenette, disabled accessible W.C and private meeting room will also transform the church into a multi-functional facility.

Matt Morgan, assistant technician at MWA, said: “At MWA we have a great understanding and knowledge of listed properties and are able to deliver projects that can transform a building whilst also respecting the site’s history.

“We’re really looking forward to starting work at St John’s. It’s a fantastic building with a great deal of history and it will be brilliant to see the church become an integral part of the community once again.”

Bishop Cato of the Pentecostal City Mission Church, added: “We are really happy that the vision for St John’s is nearing its completion and that this new building will welcome all and again be open for worship, weddings, funeral and conference room bookings.”
