Sheffield United scores £9m turnover rise in year of Championship return

Sheffield United’s first season back in the Championship has been dubbed “highly successful” after turnover rose by £9m.

Accounts posted on Companies House this week show that the South Yorkshire football club saw turnover rise to £20m in the year ending June 30 2018, up from £11m in the previous year. This rise accounts for the first season after the club was promoted in 2017. SUFC were relegated from the Championship in the 2010/11 season.

During the 2017/18 season, Sheffield United sold more than 20,000 season tickets and held an average league attendance 26,854. Corporate boxes also sold out for the first time since the club was in the Premier League.

As a result, ticket sales grew year-on-year by £1.5m and the club’s match day income increased by £2.2m. Advertising revenues also totalled over £1.8m, and commercial revenues were also up by £700,000 due to a rise in hospitality attendances

Sheffield United’s media income of £8.1m now represents 40% of its total revenue, and seven home and six away televised fixtures also contributed a further £800,000 in net income.

Pre-tax losses for the year dropped significantly from £5.7m to £1.9m, which the club said “demonstrated the impact” promotion has had on the club.

Sheffield United FC said: “Underpinning our goal of promotion to the Premier League is the adoption of a self-sustaining business model. The board seek to drive a culture of commercial awareness that encompasses continuous improvement and efficiency savings. The executive and management team have initiated several projects to maximise returns throughout the business.

“Digital engagement has also been identified as a key project in the forthcoming period and significant investment has been made to capitalise on potential revenues and experience improvements we can make in this area.”
