Newly launched discount brand opens latest store
New discount store chain One Below has opened a brand new site at Crystal Peaks in Sheffield.
One Below has been launched by father and son Poundworld founders Chris Edwards Senior and Christopher Edwards, who plan to open 50 stores this year in total across the UK.
The brand has already launched five stores in Yorkshire this March, creating a total of 100 jobs. Locations include Leeds Kirkstall Road, Leeds Crown Point, Doncaster, Rothwell and Wakefield.
As well as recruiting for a mixture of full and part-time positions in management and sales roles for the stores, One Below has taken a 160,000 sq ft distribution centre in Barnsley where it recruited 50 head office and warehouse staff.
The new independent chain will be the first discount store in the UK to sell everything for £1 and under, including brands such as Coca Cola, Pedigree, Heinz, Kellogg’s and Cadbury’s.
The store will also stock a range of items across 10 departments including groceries, home, health and beauty, baby care, toy, DIY, partyware, craft and gardening.
Chris Edwards Senior and Christopher Edwards, were the original founders of former high street retailer, Poundworld Retail Limited before it was sold to American private equity conglomerate, TPG Capital in 2014.
Christopher Edwards, managing director of One Below Retail, said: “We’re proud to be launching our new retail concept in Crystal Peaks. One Below will be the only name on the high street offering everything it sells for either £1 only or even less than a pound with branded, quality products costing as little as 29p.
“We’re also happy to be able to employ many of the former Poundworld staff, who were some of the 6,000 employees to have lost their jobs when the new owners of the business, TPG Capital, sent the business in to administration in 2018. We look forward to helping our customers to save on a variety of their favourite products.”
