Work begins on ‘ambitious’ mixed-use city centre development

Construction work has now commenced on a new mixed-use scheme in York city centre.

The Hudson Quarter site is being redeveloped into 127 apartments, 34,500 sq ft of Grade-A office space and 5,000 sq ft of other commercial uses, located in four buildings around a landscaped central courtyard.

The two-acre development, which is owned by listed property investment company Palace Capital, will be completed in spring 2021.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, conducted a ceremonial groundbreaking on the site to mark the start of the construction work.

Neil Sinclair, CEO of Palace Capital, said: “This is a major development for York and we are proud to have the Archbishop with us to formally start the construction work. Hudson Quarter will be a luxury new development in one of the best locations in the City and represents a major investment and commitment to York.”

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu added: “I was delighted to conduct a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony at Hudson Quarter. It signals work is starting on this ambitious development in the heart of York that will provide a high quality new place for people to live and work.

“This site has been under-utilised for many years and these plans will breathe new life into the area. The proposals have a wow factor and I look forward to seeing it being built over the next two years.”

Construction works follow on from the full demolition of the previous buildings on the site, which were originally the British Rail offices.

Andrew Murray, managing director of Caddick Construction, which is building the scheme, said: “Caddick Construction is delighted to be here today to be part of this ground-breaking ceremony that will see a dormant site brought back to life in the heart of York.

“Now that the Caddick team are on site they are eager to start on the visual transformation of the Hudson Quarter, providing much-needed quality homes, offices and commercial space. Its position right next to the railway station also means it is very sustainable and will quickly become a city landmark seen by the thousands of commuters who use the station every day.”
