£10m care home opens on former RAF station site

A new £10m care home has opened on the site of a former RAF repair station in York, creating 50 jobs.

Handley House has been named after the former Handley Page RAF aircraft repair station on which it is located.

The home’s operator, Ideal Carehomes, has invested £10m in the new site which has been built by sister-company LNT Construction. Providing 24-hour care for 66 residents, it has also created 50 new jobs for local people.

Located on Green Lane in Clifton, Handley House has facilities including a hair salon, café, cinema, garden lounge and ‘Sky’ bar. It also uses an  energy efficient ground-source heating system throughout the 37,000 sq ft site.

Registered manager Rachel McNally said: “Staff have been absolutely fascinated to learn more about its historical significance and we know that residents and their loved ones will take great pleasure in keeping this extraordinary wartime story alive as we go about our daily lives here in Clifton.”
