£1.6m warehouse and office handed over to cargo handling business

Britcon (UK) has completed and handed over a £1.6m warehouse and office facility for Viking Shipping Services at its HQ site in Selby.

The civil engineering and building specialist completed the design and build contract on budget within 29 weeks.

Viking Shipping is a subsidiary of Star Cargo Plc and provides freight forwarding and cargo handling services worldwide.

The latest project, which forms part of an expansion for Viking at their Selby site, includes a new 12,000 sq ft warehouse with adjoining 4,500 sq ft offices as well as an open canopy storage area.

The site was home to the first railway station to be built in Yorkshire in 1834 with the county’s first mainline service from Leeds. Viking Shipping operates its business from the original Grade II Listed railway building.

The recently completed facilities provide additional warehouse storage and offices for the company, allowing it to grow and expand into new and existing markets.

Matt Harker, Regional Manager at Britcon, said: “We are delighted to complete and handover this interesting project to Viking Shipping.

“Construction works on live operational sites bring added challenges but the project team worked around this with acute planning, coordination and communication to ensure continuity of business for the client and a safe working environment for all involved. We are very pleased with the end result”.

Graeme Pickering, Director at Viking Shipping Services, said, “The challenge on this project for both Britcon and Viking was to complete the project during our operation hours and, whilst at times there were pinch points, the teams worked together to achieve the right result.

“We are extremely pleased with the outcome. Matt and his team have been an absolute pleasure to deal with and nothing was too much trouble for them.”
