118-bedroom hotel opens its doors in York

Moxy Hotels, Marriott International’s budget-lifestyle brand, has opened its 118-bedroom hotel in York.

The opening of the hotel, situated on Stonebow in the city centre, marks the first Moxy hotel to debut in an English city outside of London.

John Licence, Vice President Premium and Select Brands Europe at Marriott International, said: “We’re excited to add Moxy York to our growing portfolio of Moxy Hotels across the UK.

“Now with 7 properties open in the UK and over 10 in the pipeline in vibrant destinations fitting the brand’s irreverent spirit, Moxy’s tailored experience continues to attract the next generation traveller.”

CEO of Belvar, the management group operating Moxy York, Mads Jacobsen, added: “Since the first UK Moxy opened in 2016 we are delighted to be adding York to our growing portfolio.  Each hotel has its own personality, showcasing eclectic art that will resonate with locals and guests alike.  For us it’s more than just bedrooms, it’s a way of doing things differently in the hotel arena.  We aim to deliver the ‘human touch’ with our approach to customer service with the focus on the bar and playful crew.”

It was in March 2017, York Council  approved the plans for the hotel to be built on the Hungate site in York, despite concerns the building could overshadow a historic pub the Black Swan pub on Peasholme Green.

Moxy said it was famed for reflecting each hotel’s locality in its décor and Moxy York “will be no different”.

Moxy added: “Bringing the main characteristics of York’s history into the lobby, guests will find a contemporary interpretation of The Shambles.  The Amsterdam Street Art Foundation selected two well-known street artists to create the stunning pieces of art for Moxy York.  A black and white portrait of a knight and a colourful mural in stained glass theme gives a real wow factor for guests and the perfect photo moment to share on social.”

The hotel will have an eclectic funky bar that doubles as check-in.  Moxy York also boasts a gym, as well as co-working spaces.
