Preparations for a new, multi-million pound Spen Valley Leisure Centre will begin in September.

Kirklees Council is committing £14,250,000 to the scheme and Kirklees Active Leisure is contributing £750,000.

Once complete the leisure centre will feature: an eight lane, 25-metre main pool; a 20m by 10m activity pool with moveable floor; a large fitness suite; two fitness studios with flexibility for other use; a cycling studio; two changing villages with family cubicles, baby change, large team changing areas and various sized accessible changing spaces.

Spectator seating will still be available on the site, however it will be reduced to approximately 90 seats.

A new car park for customers will be created, though the exact number of spaces is still being determined. The car park will be free and will include disabled parking bays, electric car recharge bays and cycle storage.

All the facilities will be designed to enhance the leisure offering in North Kirklees, supporting local people for many years to come.

As part of the transformation, Spenborough Pool will close to customers on Saturday 31 August so demolition can start a week later in preparation for the state-of-the-art centre being built over the next two years.

An invitation to tender has been issued to appoint a contractor in the coming months and construction is expected to start in early 2020.  The facilities will be open for use in autumn 2021.

Kirklees Council leader, Councillor Shabir Pandor, said: “The new-look leisure centre, and the huge investment we have made to create it, are a sign of this council’s ambition. It will be a fantastic boost to thousands of individuals and groups in the district, especially in North Kirklees.

“We are moving into a vital stage of this major regeneration project and I am delighted to see the work progressing so well.

“We are committed to improving health outcomes and to helping local residents stay active and well. High-quality leisure facilities are a central part of achieving those goals.

“The leisure complex will be a wonderful asset for the local community and will also attract more visitors into Kirklees.”
