Infrastructure planned to help charge up electric vehicle revolution

Proposals to enable a major leap forward in provision for electrical vehicles have been put before York City Council.

A planning application has been submitted for a solar canopy, five dual fast charging units and eight ultra rapid charging hubs at Poppleton Bar Park & Ride.

And some of the parking spaces will have solar panel canopies built over them if the application is passed.

The £1.5m project to build two “hyper hubs” – at both Poppleton Bar and Monks Cross Park & Ride sites – was given permission by York councillors in April. The latest application is to install the necessary technology at one of these locations.

A statement submitted on behalf of the applicant explains: “York aspires to be at the forefront of electric vehicle charging that supports the use of next generation electric vehicles.

“The Hyper hubs project seeks to provide next generation charging infrastructure that will support fleets, residents and visitors to have the confidence to use electric vehicles.

“York also has a high proportion of terraced housing, particularly within the city centre, and the lack of off-street parking is a significant barrier to the uptake of Ultra Low Emissions Vehicles (ULEVs) within these areas.

“Ultra Rapid Charger Hubs are the central infrastructure element of the Go Ultra Low York Programme.

“By creating electric vehicle ultra rapid charging infrastructure at multiple locations in the York transport network, this would facilitate greater uptake of ULEVs by providing next generation charging facilities for business users, residents and visitors, while supporting residents without off-street charging to easily charge an electric vehicle.

“The aim is to locate multiple hubs around the outer ring road of York, with each hub having a larger number of rapid chargers than ordinarily used in similar projects in the United Kingdom while also providing next generation ultra rapid chargers.

“By providing multiple access rapid charging capability to the key traffic flow corridors, the hubs would provide quick charging which is convenient, reliable and resilient.

“The Ultra Rapid Charging Hubs are intended to offer ULEV drivers an experience which is as convenient and familiar as filling a conventional car with petrol.”
