Plans have been revealed to build a large extension at York Teaching Hospital, to serve as a new Vascular Imaging Unit.

A detailed application has been submitted to York City Council, featuring proposals by Kier Construction on behalf of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The scheme would be on the eastern side of the hospital site, on land currently used as a car park. If approved, it would include a three-story extension with 27,060 sq ft of internal floor space.

A design statement drawn up by O’Neill Associates Chartered Town Planning Consultants says: “The scope of the project is limited to the design and delivery of the conversion and extension of the existing Vascular Imaging Unit near the south entrance of the York Hospital.

“This will provide a Hybrid Theatre on the first floor (with associated Post Anaesthesia Care Unit) and Vascular Labs (and ancillary accommodation) on the ground floor to provide solutions for a number of clinical services across Radiology, Cardiology and Vascular Surgery.

“The proposals will significantly improve care and facilities for patients. The development will deliver a high-quality facility providing secondary health care for the benefit of the region.

“This gives rise to major public benefits of regional significance which would significantly outweigh any harm arising to local heritage assets.

“Staffing, and patient levels are not anticipated to change as a direct consequence of the proposed development, as it is replacing an existing outdated Vascular Imaging Unit and the demand already exists.

“Despite the loss of approximately 40 car parking spaces arising from the proposal, the site has been developed with adequate car parking and cycle parking spaces for users of the hospital.”
