Milestone reached in town’s railway station redevelopment

The new route in and out of Doncaster Railway Station for vehicles starts on Sunday morning, 27 October, as the transformation of the forecourt moves into its final stage.

Completion of the access layout means work can now start on turning the existing parking area in front of the station into an inviting public space.

The public realm will feature an iconic piece of public art and will be the focal point of the gateway into Doncaster town centre.

The new traffic arrangements will see vehicles access the station from Trafford Way and leave via West Street and the new junction on Cleveland Street. As part of the road layout the new taxi rank which sits next to the new glass canopy will be in operation.

A number of time limited car parking spaces will be available for passengers to be dropped off at the station.

Additional parking is available in the car park on West Street – the former Royal Mail Sorting Office site – which will also offer up to 20 minutes of free parking for drop offs and there is on street parking in nearby streets.

Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “Progress with the redevelopment of Doncaster Railway Station is moving forward at pace. The opening of the new road layout is crucial in that our attentions can now turn to transforming the forecourt into a stunning public space.

“Once the full scheme is completed in spring 2020, people arriving in Doncaster by train are going to be greeted by a wonderful experience which showcases the direction Doncaster is heading in. The gateway will welcome visitors from far and wide, attract new investment and deliver jobs and growth for the whole of the borough.”

The council-led redevelopment of the station forecourt is being carried out in partnership with London North Eastern Railway (LNER) and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE). The scheme  is benefiting from £7.5m worth of Sheffield City Region funding.

The railway station redevelopment is part of the wider Doncaster Urban Centre Masterplan. Full details can be found at: www.doncaster.gov.uk/trainstation
