Consultation continues into plans to extend fertiliser mining permission

People and organisations can still respond to a consultation on a company’s application to mine beneath the North York Moors for another 25 years.
The permission is being sought by ICL Boulby, which wants to continue its polyhalite fertiliser operation.
Its current planning permission which has been in place since 1968 expires in 2023.
A spokesman for the company said: “Following a successful transition which saw the mine become the world’s first and only producer of the ground-breaking multi nutrient mineral polyhalite, the planning application is the next phase in the ‘Building Boulby’s Future’ strategy.
“This aims to drive forward an increase in production to a target of 1.3m tonnes per year by 2023, securing over 500 jobs and ensuring the mine continues to make a major contribution to the economy of East Cleveland and the wider area.”
Up and coming consultation events include: Tuesday, November 12, Saltburn Learning Campus (Library)– 4pm -6pm; Wednesday, November 13, Lingdale Village Hall– 2pm – 6pm; Thursday, November 14, Guisborough Town Hall– 2pm – 6pm; Tuesday, November 19, Carlin How Jubilee Hall– 2pm – 6pm; and Saturday, November 23, Brotton Village Hall–9am – 2pm.
In addition, members of the public may inspect the application, plans and other documents submitted at the following locations until November 22nd: Loftus Town Hall; Cleveland Potash Gatehouse; Redcar Community Heart; Skelton Library; Staithes Village Memorial Hall.
ICL Boulby’s spokesman added: “Already over £30m has been invested in making the transition to polyhalite. Boulby products – marketed as Polysulphate – are now helping farmers and growers to increase growth and yields in countries across five continents.”
