Engineering industry tool steels supplier is acquired in strategic deal

Bird Stainless, a Sheffield-based specialist stainless steel long bar supplier, has acquired AKM Steels, in Rotherham.

AKM is a supplier of quality tool steels for the engineering industry.

Bird Stainless is an established stockholder and processor of high strength stainless steels, supplying a wide cross section of industry sectors from oil and gas, through to marine and engineering.

The company has enjoyed organic international growth over the last few years, notably in the marine sector.

It attributes its success to the fact it offers not only an extensive stockholding, but also comprehensive on-site processing facilities, which include cutting, precision grinding, straightening and polishing.

Bird Stainless explains its acquisition of AKM Steels is a “strategic move” to expand its own range of grades and products, making it even better placed to serve the engineering and tool making sector.

Nigel Bird, managing director of Bird Stainless, said: “I am excited to bring AKM Steels into our fold.

“Like us they are a longstanding Sheffield family business offering quality product, fast delivery times and excellent technical support. It will give us a much wider product offering benefiting the customers of both companies.”

He added it will be “business as usual” following the deal, with all staff to remain on site and customers still able to purchase exactly as they have done previously.
