£125m warehouse planned to meet online demand

A new £125m warehouse in West Yorkshire could be created by retailer, Next to meet the demand for online orders.

The firm ,which as submitted an application to Wakefield Council is seeking approval for a 777,000 sq ft warehouse in South Elmsall, which would create over 1,000 jobs.

The retail giant currently has an existing distribution and warehouse centre in the area, but with online sales expected to increase in coming years and this site operating at capacity, the application highlights that the new development “safeguarding the future of Next’s existing operations in South Elmsall, and the substantial local employment and benefits to the local economy that this existing development provides”

The new site which would include warehouse space and ancillary offices estimated to generate a gross value added (GVA) to the economy of more than £46m per annum. With new roles created across a number of areas including IT and software engineering.
