Company engineers its largest contract win to date

A Leeds-based engineering business is providing full civil and structural engineering services on the second phase of a multi-award-winning regeneration scheme.

Adept Civil and Structural Consulting Engineers was awarded the contract by Henry Boot Construction, the principal contractor on The Glass Works – Barnsley town centre’s £180m redevelopment – which will provide a modern retail and leisure offering.

The second stage of The Glass Works build is currently under construction, and Adept is responsible for designing the foundations and steel frames for four key buildings.

They will be home to a wide variety of retail and leisure facilities including 26 retail units, a 13-screen Cineworld, seven family restaurants, a Superbowl UK bowling, soft play and laser quest, a public square and a 500-space multi-storey car park.

Confirmed names for the scheme so far include Next, Sports Direct and its fashion arm USC, Nando’s, Muffin Break, independent restaurant MEET, Coffee Boy and JD Sports – which opened in October.

The project has provided a new home for Barnsley’s famous market, a new independent food court, Market Kitchen, and the flagship Library @ the Lightbox, a state-of-the-art community hub.

Adept has been involved in designing the buildings with transfer structures to ensure Yorkshire Water has access to the existing main sewer, which runs under part of the proposed buildings.

The company has also focused on the isolating sound proof designs for the cinema. Adept’s team of civil and structural engineers started working on the project 18 months ago.

Erol Erturan, Adept’s managing director, said: “This is a hugely exciting project that has already seen the creation of the Library @ the Lightbox this summer and the relocation and rejuvenation of Barnsley Markets and opening of the Market Kitchen.

“We are proud to be involved in Barnsley town centre’s impressive transformational regeneration scheme which is expected to be completed in 2021.

“This scheme will see 125,000 sq ft of retail, café and restaurant space created within four buildings, framing a landscaped Public Square, along with more than 90,000 sq ft of leisure facilities.

“The result will be a genuine destination for shoppers in Barnsley that is on par with some of the North of England’s best mixed use, retail led developments.

“Our role sees us working with Henry Boot Construction to ensure all 5,000 tonnes of the structural steel works for the second phase are designed and detailed to suit the complex geometries of the proposed buildings, particularly for the 13-screen Cineworld building, where the individual screen rooms incorporate acoustic separation from the main steel frame.

“We are also working on the drainage design for the whole site and are incorporating attenuation storage underneath the proposed public square.”

Adept has been involved in several landmark Yorkshire projects including the £9.5m spa development at Rudding Park and the refurbishment of Leeds Kirkgate Market.

The firm is working on the development of Future Park in North Yorkshire – one of the UK’s most significant cultural and energy-efficient attractions to be built in the 21st Century.

Adept has also delivered projects for Asda, Sports Direct and Next.
