Super-college suggested for the region

Jake Berry MP

According to an article in The Sunday Times Boris Johnson’s new Government are keen to create a “new world leading institution” in the north of England.

The article claimed Leeds is being suggested as the location of choice and that Northern Powerhouse minister Jake Berry is leading discussions.

The apparent aim of this new “super-college” would be to provide space, technical-support and seed money to people looking to invent products for a global market.

Mr Berry is quoted as saying: “We want to set up a world -leading institution in the north to rival Oxford and Cambridge, where the best and brightest will base themselves to create new ideas and sell them.”

The article referenced how Universities outside of the ‘golden triangle’ (Oxford-Cambridge-London) are deemed as underperforming with regards to translating academic research into practical business ideas/products.

Thebusinessdesk.com has approached Mr Berry for a further comment as to why Government feels a need to create a something new.  There are a plethora of leading higher education institutions across Yorkshire many of which are already fostering innovation and businesses. In recent weeks alone Slingshot Simulations and SleepCogni have both gained funding to further develop their products.
