My Yorkshire: Claire Steven, general manager of Oulton Hall

Claire Steven is general manager of Oulton Hall, a four-star hotel just outside Leeds.

Where do you live/where are you from?

I live in Roundhay in North Leeds, but I am originally from Edinburgh.

What is your favourite place to visit and why?

I really enjoy getting out in to the hills for fresh air. The Cow and Calf Rocks and Bolton Abbey are two of my favourite Yorkshire spots – both have such wonderful viewpoints.

What is still on your “to do” list in the region?

I’d love to complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks – perhaps a New Year’s resolution!

What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had?

I have always loved dining out and when I was starting out in my career I would save up especially to eat at high-end restaurants. Even though I lived in Edinburgh, I travelled to Leeds and dined at 42 The Calls and it was the most special meal I’ve ever had in Yorkshire.

The food was amazing, but it was also one of the most memorable service experiences I have ever had. It was definitely a moment when I realised the importance of top-quality service in hospitality.

What is your most Yorkshire trait?

I do love a good bargain. January is especially good as you can get all sorts of deals, from clothing, right through to a hotel getaway!

Favourite piece of Yorkshire trivia?

I really like the flavour of rhubarb, and at one time the Rhubarb Triangle produced 90% of the world’s forced winter rhubarb.

Who is your favourite icon to come out of Yorkshire?

I’m a great fan of travel, as I believe it broadens horizons, and on this basis I would have to say Captain James Cook. Alternatively, from more modern times, Michael Palin (who of course, also has an amazing sense of humour)!

Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?

Whilst I absolutely love living so close to the countryside, I do miss living near the coast. There are some fantastic Yorkshire coastal towns, but I wish I could reach them more easily from Leeds.

What is the one thing that you would steal from Edinburgh?

I must say, Edinburgh has a fantastic bus service at a fair price, linking all parts of the city and airport, something I think could be improved in Yorkshire.

What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?

It might be an unpopular opinion, but it has to be Wensleydale cheese. I do like lots of different types of cheese but Wensleydale is not my favourite.
