New home for tech enterprise to support its expansion

A Leeds-based tech firm which specialises in online learning platforms for neurosciences has moved into a new office and is looking to take on more staff to support its growth.

Synap is an online learning and revision platform which breaks materials into manageable chunks and allows users to learn more in less time. It was created by Dr James Gupta and Dr Omair Vaiyani whilst they were completing their medical training at the University of Leeds.

The business recently moved into premises in Castleton Mill after securing a contract with The Medical Defence Union which reaches 10,000 students. Synap has also received £500,000 from existing investors, led by Venturian Group to support its scale up activity.

Synap, which currently employs seven people, is recruiting for new staff to join the team. The business is looking to develop platforms in other subjects and is working on a project with the University of Law.

Dr Gupta, chief executive, said: “The last few months have been incredibly busy, but we are really excited to be working on a new platform and expand the Synap platform into other subject areas.

“We know there is more that we can do but it’s having the resource to be able to do this so the addition to our team will assist with this.”

Synap is one of the nine businesses from across Yorkshire which are part of NatWest’s new NextLevel programme which supports high-growth enterprises as they scale up and grow commercially through tailored support.

The programme officially launched in October and was recently endorsed as Leading Programme Breaking Down the Barriers for Scaleups by the Scaleup Institute in their Annual Scaleup Review 2019.

Dan Burton, Scale Acceleration Manager at NatWest, said: “It’s an exciting time for James and team at Synap as they look to grow and scale the business further through new subject platforms. We wish James and the team every success with their plans and are delighted we can support them through NextLevel.”
