My Yorkshire: David Waddington, director of land and new homes at Linley & Simpson

David Waddington is director of land and new homes at Linley & Simpson, an independent Yorkshire estate agency.
Where do you live/where are you from?
I live in the village of Bishop Monkton between Harrogate and Ripon. I love quiet village life and the occasional visit to the local pub. I grew up in Sheffield, again in a rural spot, and continue to keep a close eye on Sheffield United.
What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?
I love Fountains Abbey, it is beautiful all year round, and on the doorstep of where I live. Its history still fascinates me, as does the amazing ruins and meandering river running through the grounds. Its very rare that we don’t meet someone we know when we visit.
What is still on your “to do” list in the region?
I’ve never visited the National Coal Mining Museum for England, near Wakefield, and have always wanted to go underground there. There are still more remote areas on the East Coast that would like to explore. There are so many hidden gems within Yorkshire.
What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?
Fish and Chips at my beloved Jolly Fryer in Ripon. The restaurant is like a trip back in time, totally nostalgic.
What is your most Yorkshire trait?
My Yorkshire flat cap is always perched on my head and I seem to assume an authority on virtually everything when I wear it!
Favourite piece of trivia about the region?
I love the fact that Yorkshire is regularly in the headlines and the “go to” county to visit. I love the countryside, its people, its celebrities (excluding some), its humour … I’m proud to be from Yorkshire.
What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?
Alan Bennett, nobody does Yorkshire better.
Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?
The M62, a frightful experience.
What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?
I would steal the weather from Devon, its always three or four degrees warmer down there.
What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?
Our modesty!
