UK’s first confirmed Coronavirus cases were staying at York hotel

It has been reported this afternoon that two members of a family who have tested positive for the Coronavirus had been staying at a hotel in Yorkshire.

Earlier today Public Health England had stated the deadly virus – which has killed at least 210 people in China – is now present in Britain.

Quoting “an NHS source” The Mirror newspaper has now revealed that two members from the same family were transferred from York to the Royal Victoria Hospital.

It says a man understood to be a Chinese national, was taken to hospital on Wednesday night from the Staycity Hotel, in the centre of York, after falling ill. Paramedics took the man, along with two travelling companions, out of the premises which is near the city’s Barbican theatre.

A spokeswoman for the firm told the paper: “Staycity Group have confirmed that a man, believed to be a Chinese national, staying at the group’s property in York was taken ill and is understood to be undergoing tests at a local hospital.

“Following advice from Public Health England we have been advised that the risk is absolutely minimal.

“The health and safety of our guests and staff are paramount and as such the apartment containing the group’s belongings has been sealed off, after which it will undergo a thorough environmental clean and disinfection, as is company policy.”

In an updated over the weekend, Sharon Stoltz, City of York Council’s director of health, said: “The risk to people in York remains very low.” Public Health England also advised it was making “good progress” tracking and contacting people who had come into close contact with the pair.
