Summer completion date for work to transform railway station entrance

Progress is being made on a £2.5m investment to transform the entrance way to Bridlington Railway Station.

Work began on the Bridlington Station Plaza Scheme in July last year to create an attractive new pedestrian area in front of the railway station, the introduction of a one-way system, and brand new car parking.

The scheme is part of East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s ongoing regeneration of the town through the £13.3m Bridlington Integrated Transport Project (BridITP2).

Some sections of work have already been finished and the project is on schedule for completion this summer. So far, the work has involved the creation of a new road layout, joining Station Approach to Hilderthorpe Road.

This link road is now complete and open, and means vehicles travelling to the station from Quay Road will be able to exit via Hilderthorpe Road.

New disabled and short-stay parking bays near the station entrance have also been completed. They will open when the scheme is finished.

Contractors are currently working on the new long-stay customer car park created along Station Approach, on the site of the old car sales area, as well as drainage along the road.

The next stages will involve more work on the Station Approach road and the completion of the car park, which is due to be finished in March. Following that, work will begin on the landscaped pedestrian area in front of the station with high-quality stone paving, together with lighting, trees and benches.

The work is being carried out by council contractor PBS Construction, and the project is being supported by Network Rail and Northern.

Bridlington Integrated Transport Project (BridITP2) received £7.55m in funding from East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s regeneration reserves, alongside £5.75m from the Government’s Local Growth Fund, secured by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and part of the Government’s commitment to the Northern Powerhouse.

Councillor Chris Matthews, portfolio holder for strategic management at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “I’m pleased to see the station plaza scheme is taking shape nicely and part of the work is already complete.

“When it’s finished it will really give a big boost to the station and this area of Bridlington, making a much more welcoming atmosphere for rail passengers coming to the town.”
