Major redevelopment in progress at old colliery site

“Redeveloping Yorkshire is a massive part of what we do as a business”, explains Harworth chief executive, Owen Michaelson.

“The county is our biggest market. We see huge opportunities and I think there’s a vibrancy about Yorkshire.”

Harworth have been busy clearing the way for a massive redevelopment of Kellingley Colliery in Selby district.

Selby District Council granted permission for 1.45m sq ft of manufacturing and distribution space at the former mine site. One of the site’s key selling points is the existing direct rail link to the national network, as well as easy access to the M62 and A1(M).

The site has the potential to bring a £200m boost to Yorkshire’s economy. That’s why Selby District Council has been supporting the redevelopment work, explains the authority’s executive member for economic development, Councillor David Buckle.

“We’re super-connected in the Selby district, right at the heart of Yorkshire,” he said. “Sites like Kellingley have the potential to bring in significant new investment that supports the economy for the whole of Yorkshire, not just our area.

“We’ve got great transport links, our business space is more affordable compared to neighbouring urban areas and we’ve got a really well-qualified workforce. We also offer a great quality of life, which helps businesses attract and retain the best talent.”

At Kellingley, the final site clearance work is now taking place. Harworth is taking a flexible approach to interested businesses – they will sell bits of the site to companies to build their own units or will do long leasehold deals where they act as the landlord once new units have been built. The aim is to bring high value employment back to the site as quickly as possible.
