Urgent call for SME access to Government support package

The Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce says SMEs hit by the virus crisis need “immediate” access to the Government’s business support package.

On 17 March, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that the Government was to introduce financial measures to support the economy against the impact of coronavirus, worth £350bn in loans and other aid.

Martin Hathaway, managing director of the Mid Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, has responded: “The Government’s announcement to do ‘whatever it takes’ to support businesses was a welcome one, but with many SME’s throughout our region already on the brink, it’s crucial that we find out exactly how the grants and loans promised can be accessed – as soon as possible.

“There are reports that cash grants will be available for small businesses next week – from week starting March 23 – which will be essential for their survival, but for many, it might be too late.

“It’s needed immediately for the shops, restaurants, theatres and companies in all other sectors that sell or provide a service directly to consumers that have seen a decline over the past fortnight.

“We have received numerous queries from our members on how businesses can access the support announced but no specific instructions or criteria has been rolled out yet, so we’re urging central Government to confirm this as a matter of urgency.

“We are in regular communication with the local authorities and the British Chamber of Commerce to gain the latest information on when and how funds will be paid to businesses across the districts of Halifax, Huddersfield and Wakefield.

“It is currently our top priority to ensure our businesses survive during this unprecedented time, and the Mid Yorkshire Chamber team is on hand to support members with specific queries.”
