Charges against Sheffield Wednesday FC owner are dropped

The English Football League (EFL) has written to Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, stating that all misconduct charges against its owner owner Dejphon Chansiri and two other individuals have been dropped.

The club confirmed that it had been notified in writing of the decision. The charges – which had also been issued last November against Katrien Meire and John Redgate – related to Sheffield Wednesday’s £60m sale of Hillsborough to Chansiri.

It had been alleged that the sale involved an attempt to break spending rules.

Sheffield Wednesday has released a statement in response to the dropping of the charges, noting: “Each of the individuals considers this a vindication of their defence of the charges.

“In the club’s view this decision is a recognition of the strength of the evidence that the club has filed before league arbitration panels, which demonstrated that there was no proper basis for the charges.

“The charges against the club will proceed to a hearing and the club will continue to vigorously defend those charges. No further comment will be made at this stage.”
