Care group creating hundreds of new jobs to help combat the coronavirus crisis

A home care provider which operates across South and West Yorkshire is looking to recruit hundreds of staff urgently to meet demand caused by Covid-19.

Optimo Care Group needs to take on staff immediately to respond to the impact of coronavirus, which has caused demand for its home care services to soar at the same time that some of its existing workforce have been forced to self-isolate.

The social care service works with some of society’s most vulnerable people in their own homes, and looking after people who don’t have anyone nearby to help them every day.

The firm is looking to scale up its capacity to support Local Authorities and the NHS during the current pandemic, by enabling hospital trusts to free up beds and send patients home with the knowledge they will receive community care support.

The jobs available range from five hours a week to full time. They are open to people with or without previous experience and full training and equipment will be provided.

The hourly rates range from £8.20 – £9.50 and staff are paid for their travel time and travel expenses.

The paid roles support the health and wellbeing needs of elderly and infirm people, including assisting them with personal care, helping those with limited mobility, collecting shopping and prescriptions, and generally making sure they are ok.

Often the home care worker is the only person they will see all day and so the visit, support and conversation is incredibly important in maintaining their wellbeing.

Jane Lister, group recruitment manager at Optimo Care Group, said: “As a business we currently work with and support around 1,300 people. However, with the current situation, needing over-70s needing to self isolate and for the NHS to free beds, we have a high demand for our community care services.

“As a result we’re looking to recruit hundreds of people across Huddersfield, Barnsley, Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham, Wakefield to help us deliver the care that is needed.

“In addition to providing full training, and flexible contracts from 5 hours a week to full time, carers are also on the government’s list of key workers, meaning their children will still be able to attend school or nursery during the current closures.”

Home care visits can range in duration from 15 minutes to a few hours per day and the roles will involve travel within their designated community, with travel time and expenses covered.

Coronavirus is having a massive impact on the healthcare system locally, with the NHS under huge pressure already and the pandemic expected to significantly worsen in the weeks ahead.

Although Optimo Care is not currently providing services to anyone with a confirmed diagnosis of Covid-19, it is on the front line of helping the healthcare system look after some of the most elderly and often vulnerable people in our communities.

Social care providers are a critical part of the healthcare system, looking after people in need within their own homes. This helps to provide care where people want to be looked after and keep them out of hospital, easing some of the pressure on resources within hospitals.
