Football club staff take pay cut to safeguard jobs

Players, coaching staff and senior management have taken a voluntary wage deferral as a response to Covid-19

This is to ensure that the Championship club can continue to pay all 272 of its non-football staff and the majority of casual staff for the coming months.

The club has stated that the virus will cost them “several million pounds each month” due to various factors including no fixtures and canceled of events.

Collectively the Leeds United first-team squad said: “Leeds United is a family, this is the culture that has been created by everyone at the club, from the players and the board to the staff and the supporters in the stands. We face uncertain times and therefore it is important that we all work together to find a way that the club can push through this period and end the season in the way we all hope we can. In the meantime, let’s work as one to listen to the government advice and the health service and beat this virus.”

There’s much uncertainty around football at the moment with fixtures postponed due to the current pandemic and questions asked about how the season will or should end. There have been reports of a memo to EFL clubs including Leeds that football will not return at the end of April as originally suggested and that a new date will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Leeds are currently in the top spot within the Championship, meaning they are currently looking at a potential return to the Premier League after 16 years away from the English top flight.
