Coronavirus update – the latest news from Yorkshire businesses

The owners of a Scarborough business are playing their part in helping vulnerable people during the coronavirus lockdown.

The Hideout café on Columbus Ravine has donated food parcels to Scarborough’s Rainbow Centre, to be distributed to people in the area who are going through a tough time.

The food parcels have been created by Scarborough baker Cooplands.

Hideout manager Jordan Padgham said: “We all need to pull together during these difficult times and we appreciate how hard it must be for some people to get through all the problems of coronavirus.

“If this little parcel helps in any way then we are happy to make our contribution.”

The café has been closed since the Covid-19 lockdown, but all staff have been retained and they are looking forward to reopening.

“The café is one year old this month and we are looking forward to re-opening and celebrating with our customers once again,” Padgham added.

Belinda Youngs, CEO of Cooplands, said: “We are very pleased to be working with The Hideout to distribute these food parcels to people in need around Scarborough.

“We all have to work together during the coronavirus and support from cafes like this helps us all to get through.”

A retail app devised by a Leeds-based business is helping to connect local businesses to shoppers through the lockdown and provide ideas to keep people entertained.

The dscvr app – available on both Apple and android devices – has made it free for stores to list themselves, and is free for consumers to use.

Founder, Steve Wainwright, said: “Our app has switched from championing things to shop, eat and do in a local city to highlighting amazing local businesses that are still serving their communities through the lockdown.

“The current situation is stressful, and we also wanted to help people find things to do online to keep busy, fit and preserve their mental health.

“Options range from opera from leading institutions around the world, virtual safari’s at the world’s top zoos and aquariums, masterclasses to learn a new skill, through to family-friendly activities and fitness and wellbeing programmes.”

He added the response from local retailers has been positive, with over 240 joining the community in the last five days.

And he pointed out that in February, the number of participants joining virtual events shot up by 978% in China compared to the same time last year. The UK is predicted to follow a similar pattern.

Wainwright concluded: “There is an increasing number of small businesses who have adapted their model to continue providing services, either by moving online or by offering new delivery services, but are frustrated in getting their message out.

“We hope that our efforts can help keep them afloat in very challenging times.”

Businesses can submit their services at dscvr-app.com or via their facebook page, and the dscvr team will upload these directly onto the app.
