Game on, as listed developer sees strong demand through lockdown

Global games entertainment label and video games developer Team 17 has seen strong sales against the backdrop of the Covid-19 crisis.

In a trading update ahead of its results for the six months ended 30 June, the business, which has operations in Wakefield, Nottingham and Manchester, says it has had better than expected demand for its back catalogue, especially at the height of the lockdown during April and May.

Speaking last month exclusively to TheBusinessDesk.com Team 17’s CEO, Debbie Bestwick praised her staff for moving seamlessly to remote working, and for keeping the firm’s culture going throughout lockdown.

Today’s update further highlighted that staff will not be quickly returning to the office until the business is certain such a move will be permanent and safe.

The firm’s latest update adds: “Despite the challenges generated by COVID-19 we are delighted with an excellent start to FY2020 and, as previously announced, we have a solid pipeline of new releases weighted towards the second half of 2020.

“We have more games in development across our label than at any time in our history, including owned IP and are engaging with more partners seeking to have their games be part of our label and continue to see more new gamers playing our games and franchises.

“Gaming has historically shown good resistance in uncertain economic situations; however, we are in unprecedented times.

“We have started to see the unusually high levels of demand during April and May returning to a more normal level.”

Team17 will announce its half year results for the six months ended 30 June 2020 on 10 September 2020.
