Harrogate Town AFC confirmed its place this weekend in the English Football League following a victory over Notts County at Wembley

The team which is owned by former Strata Homes boss, Irving Weaver and coached by his son, Simon – who took the role up prior to his father’s involvement – secured its highest finish in the club’s 100 year history.

The younger Weaver has now led the club to two promotions in three successive seasons having been at the helm for over a decade and took the club professional in 2017.

It’s been quite the year for the club who thought hopes of a promotion might be quashed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the decision by the league to curtail the season.

In fact Simon  Weaver, told the BBC yesterday that he’d prepared the backroom staff for the season being over in March despite the club sitting in second place at the time, apparently  telling them, “‘I think the dream is fading for this year, we have to just get on with it’.

However the “fairytale,” as he describes it, wasn’t over and 365 days after the start of its season the team secured its sport in the EFL League Twos. This means the 20/21 season will include a Yorkshire derby for the Town against Bradford City.
