£2m highways infrastructure project begins
Construction will start today – 17 August – on a new roundabout on the A165 Scarborough Road in Bridlington, halfway between the junctions of Seathorne Road and Grindale Lane.
The work will also include improving the existing footway to create a combined cycle/footway between Scarborough Roundabout and the new roundabout.
The £2m scheme includes a £1.2m contribution from the Government’s Local Growth Fund secured by York & North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership following a successful bid by the council.
The roundabout will form the first phase of a new route that will eventually link the A165 and Bempton Lane.
It will also provide access to planned housing development, which was agreed in 2012 as part of the council’s Masterplan for the north of Bridlington.
Work on the roundabout is expected to last for around nine months. The council’s contractor will be Galliford Try.
Councillor Chris Matthews, portfolio holder for Strategic Property, Infrastructure and Climate Change, said: “I am very pleased that the council has once again made a successful bid to the Local Growth Fund to secure funding for this new roundabout, which will unlock access to much needed housing development in Bridlington.”
David Dickson, chairman of the York & North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership Infrastructure and Joint Assets Board, said: “This scheme provides vital infrastructure for future housing, paving the way for economic growth in the town.
“The LEP believes this presents a good fit for Local Growth Fund money and we’re pleased to see work getting underway.”
Two way traffic signals will be in place during the works. The existing 30-mph limit on the A165 will be extended to cover the extent of the works area.
An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesman added: “We apologise to motorists for any inconvenience caused during these essential works, and ask them to bear with us as we create essential new infrastructure for the development of Bridlington.”
