Work begins to build more than 70 affordable homes
Energy, services and regeneration specialist ENGIE has been appointed by Sheffield City Council to construct an £11.5m housing project, which will transform Berners Road and Daresbury View, in Arbourthorne.
73 homes will be built across both areas, comprising 55 two, three and four bed houses and 18 apartments, all for affordable rent.
At Berners Place, 22 of the properties have been carefully designed with wheelchair access in mind to help accommodate those with specific accessibility requirements.
Nathan Brough, regional director at ENGIE’s Places and Communities division, said: “We’re delighted that work is now beginning on this exciting new development.
“This project will regenerate the area and go some way towards meeting the council’s ambition of building more affordable homes.
“We are excited to use our construction and energy efficiency expertise to create a community where people will feel proud to live, and, as always, we will invest in the local area throughout the duration of the build to ensure we leave a continued legacy.”
Councillor Bob Johnson, cabinet member for transport and sustainability at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s great to see that the developments at Daresbury View and Berners Road are moving forward and are on the way to creating much-needed sustainable homes for our city.
“We’re working hard to meet the housing needs of our city and increase the availability of affordable rented homes.
“This scheme forms part of the council’s housing strategy to increase its housing stock by 3,100, through the Housing Revenue Account.
“It’s an exciting chance to provide high quality, energy efficient and affordable homes for local people, whilst also creating jobs for the local economy and opportunities for three apprentices, which is more important than ever during these uncertain times.
“We’re pleased to be working with ENGIE again to deliver this exciting project. I’m really looking forward to seeing the progress over the coming months.”
The project is due to be completed in March 2022.
ENGIE is currently building a further 36 affordable homes on behalf of Sheffield City Council in the Weaklands area of the city.
