Seven Santander branches to shut in Yorkshire

Santander has announced it will close 111 branches in the UK – including seven branches in Yorkshire – citing changes in customer behaviour since the start of the pandemic as the reason for its decision.

The lender said all outlets will shut by the end of August 2021 – but said most of those affected are less than three miles from another Santander branch.

Santander adds it will continue to have a network of 452 branches following the proposed changes.

And all its current and business account holders can continue to bank at 11,000 Post Office branches nationwide.

The banking giant said the plans come as it consolidates its office sites into six main locations across the UK and introduce more flexible working.

Milton Keynes, where the bank is investing £150m into a state-of-the-art new campus, will become the bank’s UK headquarters, alongside bases in Bradford, Sheffield, Belfast, Glasgow and London.

The bank said it will be contacting “potentially vulnerable customers” by phone to provide individual support.

It has said that its branch transactions dropped by 33% over the two years before the pandemic and fell by an additional 50% in 2020.
