Harworth builds ESG unit in its boardroom

Alastair Lyons

Land and property regeneration business Harworth Group has established a new Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Committee.

Harworth, which is headquartered in Rotherham, says this will seek to support its ongoing commitment to ESG matters.

It explains: “The aim of the committee is to provide oversight, on behalf of the Board, in relation to the Group’s ESG strategy and activities.

“This will include, but is not limited to, ensuring the company maintains appropriate policies and processes to effectively support its ESG framework, agreeing the ESG targets the company should set, and overseeing the company’s ESG reporting and disclosures.”

The committee is chaired by Angela Bromfield (senior independent director), and includes Alastair Lyons (board chair), Martyn Bowes (non-executive director), Lynda Shillaw (chief executive) and Kitty Patmore (chief financial officer). The committee will be supported by an external ESG adviser.

Lyons said: “As a specialist in brownfield regeneration that cares passionately about the creation of sustainable places where people want to live and work, ESG has always been at the heart of everything we do at Harworth.

“Our new ESG Committee will build on the significant progress we have made to date, with a particular focus for the coming year on setting appropriate ESG targets across our business, and enhancing our data collection, monitoring and disclosure.”

The creation of the committee is the latest step forward in the firms ESG programme which it refers to as “The Harworth Way” and includes five pillars, communities, planet, people, partners and governance.

For 2021 the firm has committed in line with the planet pillar of its ESG programme to make changes including a reduction in business miles and to ensure new acquisitions are run as energy efficiently as possible alongside utilising its sites to generate low carbon and renewable energy in order to help meet the UK’s net zero target, with its site currently generating enough energy for 74,600 homes with the ability to potentially power a further 302,810.

Harworth Group is one of the sponsors of the upcoming Yorkshire sustainability conference, In the Circle.
