Yorkshire and Humber secures £183.9m worth of Town Deals cash

Robert Jenrick

A massive investment in seven towns across Yorkshire and the Humber to create jobs and improve skills was announced today by Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick.

The £183.9m of funding is intended to help transform the region into a more attractive place to live and work by supporting skills, infrastructure and improving physical and digital connectivity across the towns.

The deals will help fund important work across the Yorkshire and the Humber, including:

  • Doncaster, which will use its £24.8m investment to upgrade Doncaster Station Gateway and its surroundings by creating greener, active transport options such as cycle lanes and walking routes. The money will also be used to provide high-quality and attractive commercial space, boosting investment and increasing footfall to the town centre.

  • Rotherham’s £31.6m investment will be used to upgrade the Riverside Quarter, into a vibrant district to live, visit and work in. In addition, cash will be used to create a thriving centre for business and commerce in the town.

  • Keighley will receive £33.6m. Projects outlined in Keighley’s bid for this money include a fund to restore and repurpose buildings and redevelop sites for commercial and residential use, improved public spaces and connectivity in the town centre and facilities to support and develop skills for local employment and entrepreneurship.

The overall investment means a total of 83 Town Deals have now been announced across the country.

Jenrick said: “We are levelling up towns and cities across the country by building stronger and more resilient local economies, boosting prosperity and opportunity in our communities, and helping them build back better from the pandemic.

“This funding will boost economic growth across the region for future generations to come. This funding will help ensure Brighouse, Dewsbury, Doncaster, Goole, Keighley, Rotherham and Shipley remain desirable places to live, work and visit.”

Today’s announcement responds to a locally led proposal put forward by councils across the region and the Town Deal Board with representation from business, the local community, public sectors and local MPs.

101 places were selected to develop proposals for Town Deals and supported with capacity funding and practical help.

Proposals were submitted to the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, where they were reviewed by officials, with final decisions taken by ministers.
