City office proposals recommended for approval

A new office development in York has been designed to take into account evolving working patterns which have emerged during the pandemic.

York architect Vincent & Brown has designed the proposals for a  new building on The Crescent, which includes partial retention of the existing Malthouse.

The planning application, for 25,000 sq ft net internal area of new offices, will go to York City Council’s Area Planning Committee next week with a recommendation to approve it by officers.

The Vincent & Brown team has worked with developer and owners of the site North Star and Crescent Developments (York) Ltd, and office experts, to create a space suitable for future, flexible workflow of the post Covid-19 era.

Each floorplate has been designed to encourage agile working, providing manageable and flexible open plan offices, specifically designed for effective collaboration.

The design of the development also allows for the potential introduction of smaller smart meeting rooms for the continuation of virtual meetings.

The proposals also include the use of larger informal social spaces, such as more substantial kitchens and breakout areas.

Other features include the atrium which will be used for natural ventilation and an emphasis on bringing natural daylight into the building.

Rob Miller, from Vincent & Brown, said: “These plans have been designed to accommodate new working behaviour that has emerged over the last 18 months and are set to continue in the future.

“This office development utilises the latest creative thinking in office layouts and will also provide much needed new office space in York city centre, boosting the economy by attracting high value jobs.”
