Opening date confirmed for brand new leisure centre

The new Spen Valley Leisure Centre will open its doors to the general public on 28 February.
The centre, based in Liversedge, is the culmination of several years’ planning and building.
It is a joint project between Kirklees Council and Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL) to transform the exercise and leisure offering in North Kirklees.
The site was previously home to the outdated Spenborough Swimming Pool and ‘Peak Physique’ fitness suite.
Construction work began just before the first lockdown of the pandemic, which presented unexpected challenges for contractors, Kier.
Councillor Shabir Pandor, leader of Kirklees Council, said: “Spen Valley Leisure Centre has truly transformed our health and wellbeing offering in this part of North Kirklees.
“We know its opening has been eagerly awaited by local residents, and we’re very excited to see all these amazing new spaces and facilities in use.
“We are immensely proud of the finished centre, particularly in light of challenges brought about during the pandemic.
“Our teams, partners and contractors have worked very hard to deliver this for the public, despite encountering many unexpected hurdles.”
Dan Doherty, regional director for Kier Construction North & Scotland, added: “Over the last two years, we have worked with Kirklees Council and KAL to turn their ambitions to build a modern, accessible space with first-class facilities into a reality.
“The leisure centre will soon be open and ready for use, and this has only been made possible by working collaboratively with our local supply chain partners.
“We are proud to have delivered this new leisure centre that will provide a lasting legacy for the local community and beyond for years to come.”
