Sylatech create new innovative products with help from a PAPI grant

Sylatech Ltd, based in York, delivers precision custom engineering solutions spanning three core areas; the manufacturing of precision metal parts through lost wax investment casting, computer numerical control (CNC) machining, and the manufacture of RF/microwave components and systems.

The company has a global blue-chip customer base across multiple business sectors including; commercial aerospace, space, defence, medical, automotive, and construction. Clients include Airbus Defence and Space, Thales, SAAB, and Duotech.

Sylatech’s customer-driven business approach allows them to identify new markets and develop innovative solutions quickly, in order to remain competitive. One such solution was identified through customers who were purchasing microwave components for radar technology, who also needed microwave assemblies. The company’s skilled staff base and knowledge were ideally placed to provide these new products.

Microwave components of radar technology require precision manufacturing and quality control testing. The expansion of Sylatech’s business into new microwave assemblies required the purchase of new technology.

Sylatech were awarded a £20,000 PAPI grant to assist with the purchase of a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) for quality control testing, which could handle the larger sized components needed for the company’s new products.

The purchase opened up new, higher-value markets to Sylatech enabling them to continue their business growth, and retain existing clients through the provision of higher-value services. The machinery led to three new products and new contracts in new markets, including the space sector. The project also led to two new jobs within the business. The machinery will allow Sylatech to continue to develop innovative new products and continue their business growth.

Sales Director, Robert Lowther, said; “The PAPI grant has had a tremendous effect on the growth of our business. The innovation that we’ve secured with this equipment has allowed us to satisfy a growing demand in the marketplace.”

How PAPI can support you

The Product and Process Innovation (PAPI) project has helped small businesses in York, North Yorkshire and the Leeds City Region develop innovative new products by providing grants for equipment since 2016. Delivered by the University of York, a team of Innovation Advisers can help companies apply for a grant of between £8,000 and £20,000 for the purchase of equipment which will create new products, services and jobs.

PAPI also offers innovation workshops; two days worth of business support, in two parts, from top business coaches. By the end of the workshop, you will have a detailed innovation plan for your business, designed to help you to grow. The PAPI project comes to an end in December 2022, so this is your last chance to apply!

The PAPI Project is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and delivered by the University of York, in partnership with The Northern Powerhouse. The project is open for applications now. Businesses can quickly check their eligibility and apply on the website at papi.org.uk or by calling 01904 328076.
