13-screen ‘next generation’ cinema to open in town centre

Cineworld Barnsley will open its doors to the public in September 2022.

The cinema, located in The Glass Works shopping and leisure centre, will feature 13 screens including an IMAX® with laser auditorium, a multi-sensory 4DX extreme cinema experience and ScreenX, which is a 270-degree wrap-around screen. There will also be an onsite Starbucks café.

4DX will feature 144 high-tech seats engineered to move in synch with the action on screen. Meanwhile, ScreenX uses up to 12 additional projectors to extend the film out onto the side walls of the auditorium.

Oli Cattanach, Cineworld Barnsley’s general manager, said: “This next-generation cinema will serve as a cultural hub, offering the local community the very best place to watch a movie and more, with a brand new Starbucks located on the ground floor entrance.

“We look forward to introducing ourselves to the proud community of Barnsley and welcoming them through our doors in September.”

Sir Steve Houghton, leader of Barnsley Council, said: “The addition of Cineworld completes the high quality leisure offer we have created in The Glass Works, complemented by exciting new places to eat, drink, shop and relax.

“A major ambition of The Glass Works was to help us diversify the town centre offer and attract some of the very best high street brands.

“This is the culmination of lots of hard work by council teams and our many partners and is a really exciting time for Barnsley town centre.”

Cineworld Barnsley has launched a recruitment drive and is inviting prospective employees to come to Oakwell, Barnsley FC Stadium, on July 30, for an open day to apply for a number of roles at the cinema.
