Glass manufacturer’s investments establish clear route to further growth

Huddersfield-based glass maker Specialist Glass Products (SGP) is investing over £675,000 in its facilities, equipment and internal training as it celebrates its 20th business anniversary.

The business will acquire a Bovone Polishing Machine and an Intermax Laminated Cutting Table, complementing its toughened and flat glass offerings.

In the months to follow, it will also receive a new CNC machine and Bystronic Cranage Machine for an additional £210,000.

Specialist Glass Products will also invest in its employees with training for the new equipment and further training in lean manufacturing to enhance professional development and allow customers to benefit from the most up-to-date industry knowledge.

The firm’s manufacturing facility allows SGP to create glass bespoke to its exact client requirements.

Its equipment includes a glass bending machine which allows glass units up to 3200mm x 5000mm to be curved.

The company has supplied structural glass used in prestigious locations, including the new Crossrail Elizabeth Line, Hendricks Gin Palace, and Cambridge University. Its work recently featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs and Remarkable Renovations.

Following a series of investments and project wins, the business’s turnover increased by 33% in 2022, and the firm is on track to increase turnover by 21% this financial year.

Andrew Taylor, managing director, said: “Since starting the business back in 2003 with just two other members of staff, we have seen some tough times, not to mention the past few turbulent years following the pandemic, supply chain shortages and energy crisis.

“Still, we have persevered and put everything into growing the company into the thriving firm it is today.

“We look forward to continuing the growth we have seen over the last 20 years and are expecting exciting innovations to improve sustainability and battle the energy crisis, especially with the Future Homes standards bill coming into play in 2025.”
